WoW on a laptop? how much $
Hey all. this is the 2nd forum i've found that makes it past the filters here at work. Much more active than the other one i foud too, i like it. Anyway. My roomate wants to play WoW on a laptop, how much is he looking to spend to get decent performance? doesn't have to be silky, but not to bumpy either.. If you have a laptop that plays WoW, what make/model is it, as well as any other suggestions. cost around 1200 or so ? thanks in advanced

At least 1gb ram minimum, more suggested as they all use shared video memory so 2g(2x 1gb) is recommended, and the dual core 2 laptops will run it well with a 128mb video card or higher.
The minimum requirements are a joke... you can't do any raiding of any kind on them, and the major cities cause you to go down to a very low frames per seconds with the minimum requirements.
Disable automatic windows updates, and set your anti-virus to only auto update definitions. Nothing like going from 30 to 10 fps for while something is killing your cycles in the background.

Or splurge like I did and get a dedicated video card. They're coming back into style more in the mid-range now, rather than being soley high end. (ie. you won't have to pay $2k for one, but I wouldn't expect seeing a $400-600 one either)
Any kind of dedicated video kicks the crap out of any amount of integrated video...unless something revolutionary has happened.
(edit) There was an ~$1200 model HP that was at Costco when I was purchasing that came with dedicated video...may want to hit up Costco's site for details on what model that might have been.

Oregon, USA Most of the laptop cards are shared, very hard to avoid in many cases...
Which is why desktop systems have usually been preferred for gaming.

Do not get a 5400 rpm hard drive, you'll want to make sure it's 7200.

imo WoW is much like Everquest and is more about gobs of Ram and a good CPU then anything else.

Runs great on Asus G1, not a cheap machine, but not super expensive either ($1700).

Got a 1.7 Centrino Gateway with 512 RAM and a dedicated video card. Shatt kills me, no lag in Kara. But that again, I run with a very few mods - KTM, auctioneer and coords. Personal opinion - 512 RAM is not enough. Plan to upgrade as soon as I can.

I have a dell Inspirion 1501 - Its the cheap Dell laptop that I upgraded to 1gb ram and 60gb hard drive. Runs decent but has a very low fps. I will be upgrading the Memory as soon as I can and i'm sure it will excell in performance. suprisingly when I upgraded to windows vista it did improve my performance. when PvPing and Raiding I use minimal Mods otherwise I have major FPS problems. but just regular use, for the amount that I payed for the laptop, I couldn't be happier. Only suggestions I have are upgrade the video card right up front since it is intigrated and don't get less than 2gb Ram. And duel core processors appear to be the way to go.
